Fall Is Now "Marijuana Ball" Season
There’s a well-known saying: Where there is a will, there is a way. And so, unfortunately, every time law enforcement officials get a little bit ahead, the drug traffickers seek to find a way to get around, or in this case, “over” them.
There’s a tall bollard-and-steel mesh fence that is almost three miles long that just went up along the southern boundary of Nogales, Arizona, with the goal of separating it from Nogales, Mexico. But this fence, which is in some places 18 feet tall, and in others 30 feet tall, must look like a football goal post to the drug traffickers on the Mexican side.
The traffickers have thrown quite a number of tightly wound football-shaped packages over the fence, hoping that their receivers will be in the right place at the right time to catch them, or at least get them on the bounce. However, police report that they have retrieved “dozens” of football-shaped bundles of marijuana. Obviously the “quarterbacks” are either not aiming well, or else their receivers are just not able to get into place. The biggest hit against the cartel’s business came when officers responding to a call about suspicious activity by the fence found a car that was stuffed with 39 football-shaped bundles of marijuana. Whoever was planning to drive off with it must have high-tailed it to safety before the police arrived.
Not all of the packages are as small as that, though. Some are larger cylinder shaped bundles that weigh over 60 pounds. Police suspect that the smugglers may be using a catapult to achieve this feat.
The fence is the latest in the attempt to make the border more secure. It replaced an old fence that was not too hard to dig under. Previously, traffickers were able to get under or through the old fence. Since this one is sunk several feet into the ground, it makes it a bit more difficult. Part of the reason for this $12 million expense was to reduce the attacks that have been regularly made on the U.S. Border Patrol agents.
